greehill has been selected as one of nine international companies participating in the Kaohsiung-ICLEI City-Business Accelerator (CiBiX). The initiative connects Kaohsiung City representatives with companies offering practical solutions for urban forest management, climate resilience and nature-positive development.
The challenge, titled “Expanding Kaohsiung’s Green Lung,” supports the city’s ambition to become nature-positive by 2030. It seeks innovative approaches that can help Kaohsiung map, maintain and expand its urban forest while increasing carbon sequestration and delivering broader benefits for biodiversity, resilience and quality of life.
Following an international Call for Solutions, ICLEI selected companies from Asia, Europe and the United States working across urban forest planning, nature intelligence, environmental monitoring, water management and climate-resilient design. ICLEI’s official announcement highlighted greehill’s approach:
“Helps cities manage urban trees as living infrastructure using LiDAR, AI, and digital twins to improve resilience, safety, maintenance, and climate-informed decision-making at city scale.”
Turning Urban Forest Data Into Action
greehill proposed a Smart Tree Inventory and urban forest management system would give Kaohsiung a consistent, measurable view of its public trees.
Street-level LiDAR and high-resolution imagery are used to create a digital twin of each tree. AI-supported analysis then transforms the captured data into more than 70 standardized tree-level metrics. These insights can help city teams understand tree structure, condition, vitality, clearances, carbon storage, stormwater interception, cooling potential and other ecosystem services.
The result is more than a one-time tree inventory. greehill creates a repeatable urban forest management system that connects data collection, analysis, prioritization and action. City teams can identify trees and areas requiring attention, focus arborist inspections where professional expertise is needed most and direct maintenance resources more effectively.
Standardized rescanning also allows Kaohsiung to measure how its urban forest changes over time. Growth, decline, canopy development, clearance conflicts and emerging risks can be compared against the same baseline, giving the city objective evidence of whether its greening investments are producing the intended results.
Supporting Kaohsiung’s Nature-Positive Vision
A reliable urban tree baseline can help Kaohsiung protect mature trees, plan future planting, strengthen biodiversity and direct investment toward heat-exposed or underserved neighborhoods. It can also support safer streets and parks, improved thermal comfort, cleaner air and more resilient public spaces.

On 2 September 2026, the shortlisted companies are meeting with Kaohsiung City representatives and international experts at the Net Zero Institute. The workshop will move the challenge from a global search for ideas to direct city-business collaboration focused on practical implementation.
